AI agents — not apps — are the next interface layer for media. The catalogs built for that shift will look fundamentally different from the ones built for streaming.
The thesis
Every era of consumer media is defined by its interface. Radio gave us the program. Television gave us the channel. The web gave us the page. Streaming gave us the app — a glass surface stocked with infinite content, sorted by playlists or feeds, browsed by users, monetized per stream.
This applies across all streaming — audio and video, music and film, podcasts and shows. Music is the anchor example throughout this brief because the first proof shipped is a music catalog. The shift itself is structural, not genre-specific.
Apps were the right interface for a world where the constraint was access. Streaming solved that. The catalog is now infinite, instant, and global. But infinite access made attention the scarce resource, and apps don't allocate attention well — they leave it to the user to figure out, and most users don't.
AI agents change the constraint. They don't sort content; they interpret intent. They don't ask the user to scroll; they ask what the user wants and assemble the answer. The interface is no longer a screen full of choices. It's a conversation that produces an experience.

The streaming model assumes the user does the work. Open the app, search or browse, pick something, hit play. The platform's job is keeping the catalog navigable; the user's job is choosing.
Agents invert that. The user says "I want something that feels like the end of a long week" — and the agent does the matching. For a music catalog, the answer might be a quiet album with chapter intros. For film, a curated double-feature with framing context. The medium is incidental; the interaction pattern is the same. Catalog navigation becomes catalog interpretation. The unit of delivery is no longer the file the user clicked; it's the experience the agent assembled.
Apps are still useful — but they stop being the primary surface. They become one of many client experiences hanging off a deeper layer where catalogs are exposed in structured, agent-readable form.
Why this isn't just better recommendation
Themed recommendation has been around for a while. Pandora-style mood radio. Netflix's "because you watched X" rows. YouTube's auto-generated mixes. "Hey Alexa, play something chill" spins one up in real time. But all of these run through the platform's classifier — the platform's algorithm decides what counts as similar, mood-appropriate, or chill. The creator's only contribution is being in the catalog. The match is one-sided: platform to user. The creator has no voice or control in how their work is experienced.
In the agent era, the match runs both ways. The agent interprets the user's natural-language intent and queries the creator's structured catalog — themes, sequences, framing, voice, visual identity the creator defined themselves. The creator isn't a unit being classified. They're a voice the agent can discover.
Why now
The creator surface stack already exists. Websites and social for presence. YouTube channels for owned video reach. Bandcamp, Patreon, Substack for direct fan economics. Streaming platforms — Spotify, Netflix, Apple — for distribution and in-platform placement. Each surface does its job for human consumers. None of them lets an AI agent query a catalog directly.
The shift is happening because the protocol layer finally exists.
- November 2024 — Anthropic releases the Model Context Protocol (MCP). For the first time, AI agents can plug directly into external data sources through a standard interface.
- February 2025 — Claude Code lands. AI engineering becomes daily-driver workflow.
- February 2026 — Claude Opus 4.6 ships. AI code generation crosses into production quality. App-building gets democratized — a single person can ship real apps end-to-end.
- April 2026 — The first artist-owned MCP server goes live. Catalog-as-agent-readable goes from concept to production.
In parallel, AI agents (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini) became real discovery surfaces in technical and influential user pockets — the demand side maturing alongside the supply side. Major platforms haven't built this layer yet, or haven't announced it — and they face a structural problem the creator-owned path doesn't. Their licensing is built around in-platform playback, and their app is the experience — fixed player, fixed UI, fixed business model. Whether it's Spotify, YouTube, Netflix, or Apple TV+, exposing catalogs to external agents that generate experiences outside that frame would require renegotiating rights across labels, publishers, studios, performers, and territories. Even when platforms do shift, the fastest paths leave the creator out of the match. The creators and rights holders who move first set the stage for what this layer should be — with rights they already control.
MCP is the protocol that opened the door. The protocol layer will keep evolving — successors will appear, standards will converge — but the interface shift is structural. What's built today against MCP transfers to what comes next.
On the ground
The thesis is not speculative. As of April 2026:
- A working artist-owned MCP server is live in production at github.com/imaginepeakstudios/matthewhartleymusic-mcp. It connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or any compatible AI client.
- A reference Experience Player driven by that server is live at experience.matthewhartleymusic.com.
- The catalog behind both — The Time Is Now, debut album by Matthew Hartley — was produced in part by Grammy-winning producer David Kershenbaum (Tracy Chapman, Joe Jackson, Bryan Adams) and released chapter by chapter rather than as a single drop.
- The underlying architecture is patent pending.
This is the proof of concept, in production, available for anyone to inspect — the first artist-owned MCP catalog to ship publicly.
What changes when the interface is an agent
When an agent is the interface, three things change about how media works.
Interpretation replaces browsing
The agent reads metadata, themes, sequencing intent, and creator-defined context, then matches it to user intent. There is no list to scroll. The output is a single delivered experience, not an array of choices to pick between.
Sessions replace plays
A play is a unit of streaming — one file, one count. A session is a unit of agent delivery — a curated sequence with introductions, transitions, and context. Sessions are unbounded, contextual, and shaped by intent. The economics that follow will look different from per-play royalties.
Surfaces multiply
The same catalog can be reached through Claude today, ChatGPT or Gemini tomorrow, a custom narrative-aware player next year, a voice agent the year after. The interface is no longer the app — it's whatever client the listener happens to be in.
From passive content to structured experience
Streaming treats a catalog as a list of files. Agents need it to be more than that.
A structured catalog defines:
- Narrative arcs — the order, the chapters, the emotional progression
- Context — what each piece is about, what the creator intended, when it should be introduced
- Sequencing intent — how the agent should string pieces together
- Voice — what the agent should say when introducing the work
- Visual — what the agent should show when presenting the work — the creator's likeness, scenes, framing
This is not metadata in the flat-tag sense. It is the creator's directorial layer — the intent that gets lost when work is reduced to a file in a feed. Exposing it is what lets an agent deliver an experience that reflects the creator, not just the catalog.
The control problem
There is a tradeoff hiding inside this shift. Most "AI for creators" tools today work by absorbing your bytes — songs, video, text — to train, reuse, or remix. Once the bytes are absorbed, control is gone in practice, regardless of what the contract says.
A copyright-preserving alternative exists: architectures where the agent sees metadata and a proxied URL only, never the source bytes. Access is verified per request; pausing or unpublishing kills it instantly. The work becomes discoverable, narratable, and playable through agents without becoming training material or a file floating around someone else's system.
This is the precondition for creator participation. Without it, exposure to the new discovery layer is a one-way trade: visibility now, control gone forever. With it, creators get the reach of agents and keep ownership of the work.
Rights without exposure are worth less every quarter. Exposure without control creates a different problem. The era will be defined by the architectures that let creators have both.
What this means for builders
If you build product, platform, or infrastructure in or around media, the implications are concrete:
- Apps are the wrong place to invest singular effort. Apps will be generated, swapped, and replaced as agent ecosystems evolve. The durable layer is below the app.
- The schema is the product. A standardized, agent-readable representation of a catalog is the artifact that holds value across surfaces. Build for that.
- Decouple infrastructure from interface — and from any single protocol. The schema, access layer, and agent-readable catalog should outlive any specific client and any specific protocol. Apps spin up against the infrastructure, not the other way around.
- Treat copyright preservation as a structural feature, not a flag. The architecture has to keep source bytes out of the agent's reach by design — not by policy.
What Harmonic Wave is
Harmonic Wave is the platform behind the first artist-owned MCP server.
